Troubled Teens-Violence in Schools

Recently in a school in Delhi, a young boy was killed by another, and although the reason(s) have not been stated clearly, family enmity was speculated. Whatever the reason, the very fact that youth today feel free to take the law in their hands, and actually show an incompetence in being able to handle anger, shows the rot in our education and value systems. Now this brings in a growing fear among parents at large, in a new area in their lives, and yet another one in parenting, to deal with. It has happened in one school, it could happen in another. It's a very disturbing trend.Teachers and parents must take this seriously, must start worrying about ways of curbing this, and preventing other such incidents from happening again.

Using lethal weapons, going to such an irreparable extreme, could the child even explain such an action? Could he pinpoint to what led to this, on introspection? Should we put the blame on the child entirely? He must be serving time at some juvenile jail, but WHO IS TO BLAME? Too many factors have led to this, I suppose , and it is time we discussed them all, without taking it lying down. It shall remain an on going discussion, no doubt, but that we have come to this is cause enough to lament.

A few sites can be visited to see the reasons, cures etc. Don't stop at that, don't forget it, act on it whether you are a parent or a teacher, help make this world a more peaceful place to live in. For however many years we come to this world, lets not spend that time in getting angry, lets spread love instead.

Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friends......

So I see a magazine that gives us some insight on this issue. Like I said we cannot ignore it. And then we hear about another 10th standard student having shot an 8th standard child, the cause being bullying, weapon was a country made pistol. Wither morals and ethics? Time we revived the "moral science" period with a renewed vigor.

It is a very disturbing trend, Varni. There has been yet another school shooting - in MP, and breaking news right now of a shooting incident in Shantiniketan - a place one would least expect to hear of such an incident.

To answer your question, Varni, I think we as a society as a whole are to blame - we know that corporal punishment handed out by teachers is still a routine occurance, parents are violent with children as Usha jesudasan's post painfully reports. The role of media - print and electronic may also have a role in all of this, and a world in general that is rife with violence.

Our children in India seem to be naturally following a disturbing worldwide trend. Those of us who thought that our (relatively) stronger family structures and values in India (than those in nations such as the US) are sadly mistaken, I think. The values in our society are eroding as can be clearly seen by that long list of examples that learnertransmitter has shared.

Truly sad and disturbing...

i agree with both of you and shuchi  and usha - the home has to be a place where children are taught to love and not to hate

but now we also have to teach them to stay out of trouble and protect themselves

well i guess if anyone can it's us so that's the positive side to it

as the old song goes " with god on our side...

and i was thrilled to read that beatles quote - i only wish our kids would tune in to the love, peace and happiness side of the sixties..

Since we all agree to the fact that home has to be a place where children are taught to love and not to hate (in the words of lettertransmitter), could we as a new year resolution pick (say for example) 10 students/children to work with to instill these social values or pick at least two families to do the same. And in turn if they too do the same I believe it will make a big impact and a great help to our society.

Yes Daniel, we could surely in our own little worlds try our best to keep peace, and also spread love around.

Thanks Koshy(?), for appreciating the line I took from the Beatles song "we can work it out". O! how I wish children of today were a little less materialistic and yes, like you said, could tune in to love, peace, non violence and such.
