Technology is helping

Technology is advancing with speed of light. I am a teacher. Gone are the days when teachers were using a blackboard / chalk for teaching . With the advancement of new technologies ,now it has become essential to learn and adapt to using them. It is because, these days students are not just relying upon what is taught to them in the school. They are exposed to new environments. So, there is a diar need to change the methods of teaching learning.

I am teaching mathematics. Earlier it use to be solving the text book questions and thats all. But now, it is not just all. I am exploring new strategies for teaching learning mathematics. I have set up a mathematics laboratory in my school . I am using various manipulatives like unit cubes, geoboards ...techniques like paper folding , cutting and pasting etc. And this has changed the whole scenario. The students are able to visualise a concept taught in the classroom.

I am sharing the mathematics laboratory activities done in the laboratory on my class blog.

Will share more later...

I could not agree more! (but that's hardly surprising since I am an educational technology specialist). Varni had posted and elog recently - Technology in Education - How Far Are We?, to which I had responded. Well, here are some more ideas, Varni, especially about the use of Technology in Maths.

By the way, Rashmi, your blog was shared recently here on educatorslog.in - http://educatorslog.in/mathematics_laboratory. I'm sure it is a source of inspiration to other teachers here, several of who are trying to get their feet wet in terms of integrating technology in their teaching. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, sgrover, I do feel that we as teachers need to get attuned to the latset ways in technology, regarding education. I am seeing it put to extremely constuctive use by many schools and teachers, and at my own level try to learn as much as I can. I enjoy teaching, it is my passion. To see teachers showcase thier work and share their resources is great. I appreciated Rashmi's blog, and did join it to congratulate her too. Excelent work there. Sometimes I feel living in one of the smaller cities of our country, we are losing out on a lot, when it comes to being in tune with the latest methods used in education. We do follow the old style still, I really am at a loss as far as working out how to get it all started at my own level in school.

A non-profit organization by the name of educause, is committed to enhancing the use of technology in education. It can be understood from here that all over the world teachers are still in childhood stages, in varying degrees, whereas getting hi-tech in their practices. Of course, busy educators must carve out the time to learn how to use technology.Just today, we celebrated the National Science Day, and the quality of the debate was truly excellent. I wish I had taped it and put it up for others to hear. Well, I guess, that slight hitch shall vanish too soon, enough. Till then..

Yes, educause has a big footprint, especially in the US (they also manage the .edu domains!). They are aimed at Higher Education more at school education, however, but as Varni noted, educators all over the world are beginning to use technology, and many are still in early stages of adoption.

Here's to day when teachers will be able to share videos and audios of debates, or even live webcasts of their schools events here in India! I don't think it's very far away :)
