Resources for Learning Abacus

I've just added a Learn the Abacus section on my website. This section will have videos to help learn (and teach) the abacus and worksheets for practice. There are 2 sessions (with 10 worksheets) up as of now.

I've crafted the sessions from my own experience of teaching my daughter the abacus (she features in the video!).

Taming Infinity

"TAMING INFINITY" is a presentation by Manil Suri , Professor at University of Maryland.
It basically explains the concept of infinity,in interesting manner.

The video is a must see for anybody, having basic knowledge of Mathematics.

It will really help  students   understand Calculus better.

Math Worksheets

I'm the mother of a 5 year old. I've made a few math worksheets on Kindergarten and Primary maths (numbers, addition, multiples, factors, fractions...). They are available as .pdf downloads from my website. They mostly relate to the stories we tell each other and to what we see around us. As of now there are about 10 worksheets, but I will keep adding. Any feedback is welcome.

Technology is helping

Technology is advancing with speed of light. I am a teacher. Gone are the days when teachers were using a blackboard / chalk for teaching . With the advancement of new technologies ,now it has become essential to learn and adapt to using them. It is because, these days students are not just relying upon what is taught to them in the school. They are exposed to new environments. So, there is a diar need to change the methods of teaching learning.

I am teaching mathematics. Earlier it use to be solving the text book questions and thats all. But now, it is not just all. read more

Theatre in Education

One of the most interesting ideas I have chanced upon in recent days is "Theatre in Education". It appears to be a fairly simple idea to use drama and theatre techniques to infuse creativity/innovation in the classroom (discussed here in this forum earlier) to teach kids in a manner that results in greater understanding, and fun also, I suppose. A group that is actively involved in this effort in Bangalore is maintaining the blog linked to this post (related link). read more

"Brain-popping" Animations for various subjects

BrainPop is an "Animated Educational Site for Kids for use in Science, Social Studies, English, Math, Arts & Music, Health, and Technology". [A recent addition - BrainPopJr. is aimed at children in grades K-3.]

There are scores of animations that can be shown to kids, each followed by a quiz (which tests the factual knowledge) based on the material covered in the animation.

Unfortunately, it is not all free (they do have about 10% of the animations in each category available for free), and one needs a paid subscription to view all the animations. read more
