I went to the ndtv.com review of the new book on Alternative Schooling in India that Anjum shared in this post, and discovered this other new book on education, also published by Sage (price Rs. 395), that is authored by Malvika Kapur and is titled "Learning from Children What to Teach Them". Was musing over all the things I wish I had learnt before i actually learnt them - things which if I had learnt off of them, would have made "living" my life better. The list is very long :) but one which really gets me going is failure. Everything in our education system is geared towards succeeding and striving for it. Which is good. However, the best learning occurs when we fail. When we dont achieve what we set out to do, when we plain mess up AND have to face the consequences. read more

The article talks of a standardized test which can detect learning diabilities more or less accurately developed by the University of Haifa - this will be a great help to all and sundry because we are seeing both a mushrooming of people with disabilies and of others with difficulties, along with, in many cases, ignorance about what all this really means - and the very rare case of parents over reacting to minor issues. If this news is true and the test can be standardized even further in terms of language and age level, level appropriateness etc. read more
