Asking Big Questions

Happy New Year, all!

I wanted to share this short audio excerpt (from the PBS podcast channel) which conveys a simple but important message not just for students, but for teachers as well who need to design curricula to reflect the interconnectedness of nature through multi- and inter-disciplinary teaching, or simply put, thematic teaching.

In the podcast, which is an excerpt from Dr. Judah Folkman’s commencement address at Oberlin College in 2002, he talks about how his high school chemistry teacher inspired him to think big and make unlikely connections. read more

Education for Peace: combating violence

EDUCATION FOR PEACE by Meeta Mohanty
It is indeed sad to witness terrorist attacks in India and most metropolitan cities being targeted one after the other. But what are we doing to change the scenario. We feel unhappy, talk about issues and still remain consumers of knowledge. As an educationist I feel a strong need to integrate education for peace in curriculum. read more

Is Indian education really good ?

Indian human talent is being recognized all over the world and Indians abroad are at helm of affairs.

Is the success of Indians abroad result of Indian education system or fierce competition a high ranking student goes thru before he gets admission in a premium professional course.   Typically less than 5% of quality  students get admission in a premium engineering or management school.  Is the success more because of this tough screening or the Indian education system. read more

Looking for State Learning Standards/Objectives

the NCERT has made a national curriculum framework - which serves as a guide for the SCERTs to devise their age-wise learning standards/objectives leading to curriculum and leading to teacher resources (aka textbooks).

while this is a good logical approach, there is little information from the SCERTs on the Learning Standards/Objectives that they have designed.

English not Telugu in Andhra State Schools

Wonder if people caught this story. What do you think? Is it a good move?

I cannot see states like Karnataka following suit anytime soon, but would not be surprised if a state like Bihar suddenly decided that this is indeed a good strategy!

Schools like Parikrama in Bangalore also believe that English is the passport to a better life for urban slum children, and are teaching them the ICSE syllabus in an English-medium setup.

Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

A fantastic short piece by Gurcharan Das - Our Achilles Heel - has raised that issue of creativity and innovation once again. ("Our Achilles Heel" here referring to our archaic Indian educational System.)

The article describes the story of a certain Mark Bent who invented a solar torch that works for 7 hours before it needs to be recharged in the sun, that is finding good use in African villages. read more

Gujarats' Textbooks: An Error Dump

Dear Community Members,

I was browsing thorough this article on indiatogether website and i found it quite disturbing. Is this the kind of education and knowledge the educators of the country are supposed to be imparting? It is high time that the educators and policy makers of the country put their individual bias aside and though in a straight-hearted mind towards the development of every indian student as a responsible and seculr student. Using text books as a means of spreading a political parties propaganda is pathetic. read more

Different forms and levels of interactions- the key to active learning

Everyday brings in new interactions of some kind or other; it may be in the form of a discussion, reading of an article/book, conversations with individuals, watching of a programme, and hands on experiences…… Have you ever wondered why certain learning interactions through specific products or experiences are more superior and effective than the others? read more

Creativity in the Classroom

Creativity & Innovation seem to be buzzwords today, not just in the world of design, but in the corporate world as well as in education today.

I've been wanting to write an elog on this ever since I attended an immensely fascinating workshop on Creativity at the recently held TAISI conference in Bangalore (where I also held a session - on "Technology Tools for Collaboration"). This workshop conducted by Dr. read more
