Wikibooks & Wikijunior

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikijunior

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page

These books seem to be better than Wikipedia for helping school children with extra reading on several topics. The wikijuior books are not many in number just now but whatever I saw seem to be well targeted at school children's leve. The wikibooks on Science that I saw seemd more for the children preparing for Board Exams - they even have questions at end for assessing what has been learnt and for exam practice. read more

Animals Save the Planet

Incredibly enjoyable set of animated videos that bring home simple messages of how to be more environmentally conscious. Wonderful for elementary school age kids, but can be enjoyed by one and all!

The site has links to what carbon footprint means and other tips on how to "Go Green".

These videos are a must watch!

Stories of Peace

I received this book from Arvind Gupta accompanied with this note -

"Today I stumbled upon a wonderful book on PEACE STORIES by a very famous author Martin Auer - he is a very distinguished author - winner of the Hans Christian Anderson and other awards. He has put them on his website for free individual downloads. His story THE BLUE BOY is already out in 25 languages. Here is a really kind man who for world peace has done such a selfless job. read more

Good History site on explorers

I dont know if anyone has already listed this site here, but this is a very good resource for History on European explorers who came to India. It is called THE EUROPE-INDIA MARITIME HISTORY PROJECT (which seems to include Indians too as seen in the 'interviewees' list).

I liked the timeline section. The Internet Resources section also has many good history websites listed.

(I was not able to visit educatorslog regularly - nice to see lots of new posts and links and videos and people. I liked the ideas for geography with Google Maps and Google earth)

Cool Science

With all the buzz around the Large Hadron Collider experiment which will fire up today, I thought I'd share a few links that you could share with your students as well to understand this huge, and hugely important, science experiment that we will be witness to.

If you want to get an idea of what the (Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment is all about - I've found this basic intro on Alice, CMS, Altas, LHCb and read more

Map Your World: Google Maps in the Classroom

Imagine a History assignment where a student must submit a write-up on Mughal Architecture (or the form it takes as an oft-asked question in exams - "the contributions of Shah Jahan to Indian Archtecture"). Or a "project" on the temples of India. Think of the way this is usually done - a hand-written write-up with pictures cut and pasted into the notebook. Or in schools where students have access to computers this would take the form of a Word document with text and images or perhaps a powerpoint presentation with text and images. read more
